Your Quintessential Ride-Ready List

Make sure you are always prepped for your mountain bike rides and any singletrack adventure with this comprehensive checklist covering essential gear and safety items. From obvious items, like your mountain bike and helmet, to smaller essentials, like sunscreen and snacks, this list will make sure you're fully equipped for any ride.

  1. Mountain Bike: The obvious necessity! Essential bike checks include:
  • Check your tire pressure
  • Make sure your chain has recently been lubed

  1. Helmet: Obvious part two! A quality helmet is non-negotiable for safety. Check that the straps are tight around your chin.

  1. Gloves: Your BFFs for grip and protection. Gloves provide better control over your bike's handlebars and protect your hands from blisters, scrapes, and impacts in case of a fall.

  1. Apparel: You know all the goodies from moisture-wicking shirts, a chamois if you choose, technical shorts, tall socks, and the optional bandana for some flair.

  1. Footwear: Invest in sturdy cycling shoes with proper soles and protection, like a reinforced toebox. They'll enhance your pedaling efficiency and provide stability on rugged terrain. If you don’t have MTB shoes just yet, opt for a pair of athletic shoes or Vans for their stiff soles.

  1. Eyewear: Always protect those eyes. Sunglasses or clear glasses protect your eyes from dust, debris, and harmful UV rays. Choose ones with interchangeable lenses or transition lenses for varying light conditions.

  1. Sun Protection: Sometimes people forget this one! Remember sunscreen to protect your skin and lip balm with SPF for your lips. Pro tip: apply at the trailhead and also pack a travel size for on-trail reapplication.

  1. Hydration Pack or Water Bottles: Stay hydrated! Carry enough water to keep you fueled throughout your ride. Hydration packs are convenient for longer trips, while water bottles fit easily on your bike frame. Pro tip: bring both! A water bladder and a bottle for your frame with electrolytes.

  1. Multi-Tool: Be prepared for mechanical issues by carrying a multi-tool for on-the-go adjustments and repairs. Look for one with essential tools like Allen keys, screwdrivers, and a chain breaker.

  1. Pump, Plugs, & Tire Things: A hand pump or C02 cartridges will help inflate your tires on the trail, while plugs and patch kits are essential for repairing punctured tires. Ensure they're lightweight and compact to fit easily in your pack. Include a spare tube and two tire levers for the ultimate flat-repair backup.

  1. First Aid Kit: Pack a small first aid kit containing essentials like adhesive bandages, antiseptic wipes, tweezers, and pain relievers for minor injuries and emergencies.

  1. Snacks: Fuel your ride! Pack energy bars, nuts, or fruits to keep your energy levels up during long rides. Choose portable snacks that won't weigh you down.

  1. Phone: Stay connected and safe! Bring your smartphone fully charged and protected in a waterproof case. Your phone can serve multiple purposes, including navigation, communication in case of emergencies, and capturing memorable moments along the trail.

  1. Fanny Pack or Backpack: Carry your essentials comfortably and conveniently with a fanny pack or backpack. Choose one with enough storage space for your gear and consider features like hydration bladder compatibility for longer rides.

Optional:

15. Digital Trail Map/GPS: Carry a digital map for live location tracking or use GPS to avoid getting lost in unfamiliar terrain. Use apps like MTB Project, Trail Forks, or All Trails for live trail tracking.

That’s it! While this list has a few handfuls of must-bring items, it is your essential pre-ride checklist. Save this in a note on your phone for easy access to familiarize yourself with these items.

You’re now set for the trails! Enjoy your ride, babe! XOX.
